Aiare Level 1

Students will start to develop a good grounding in how to prepare for and carry out a backcountry trip in avalanche terrain, to understand basic decision making while in the field, begin to recognize avalanche types and problems, and to learn companion rescue techniques required to find and dig up a buried person.

Dates: Include both a Wednesday evening LIVE lecture/discussion with a group of AIARE instructors and two field days.

A link is made to a future AIARE Avalanche Rescue and Level 2 course.

At the end of the AIARE 1 course the student should be able to:
– Plan and prepare for travel in avalanche terrain.
– Recognize avalanche terrain.
– Describe a basic framework for making decisions in avalanche terrain.
– Learn and apply simple companion rescue skills.

Courses will include significant time out in the cold, snow, wind; possible rain, uneven surfaces, slippery trails. Course participants must have proper cold weather gear and snow “flotation” gear -i.e. snowshoes, backcountry skis (w/metal edges and skins), or split board. Working avalanche transceiver  (less than 7 years old), shovel, probe, and medium sized day pack are required for this course.
