The Outbound Mountain Gear Tune & Service Shop - The Jake

At OMG we consider our service department the heart and soul of our shop. It is what keeps you biking, skiing, and riding. Without our service shop, and without you trusting us with your gear, we do not exist. With that being said, we have decided to honor our culture of the gnar by naming our tunes after people that we have lost, who have affected our lives and our industry in a positive way.

Today we highlight Jake Burton Carpenter.

Jake is a legend who needs little introduction. Perhaps the most famous snowboarder in history, Jake is considered one of the founding fathers of American snowboarding. He created Burton Boards in 1977 at a time when snowboarding was a mystery to the masses. Since then, Burton Snowboards has launched the careers of Team USA’s best Olympic athletes (including Shaun White and Red Gerard). Burton Snowboards went from a pipe dream in an old barn to a corporation worth $700 million.

Beyond his success in business, Jake was known for being an incredibly warm person. He was a family man, not only to his wife and kids but also to all of Burton’s athletes. He painted a different picture of what a business mogul could (and should) be. He not only drove the sport of snowboarding into mainstream success, he also ignited a new passion for millions of people.

Jake passed away from cancer at age 65 in 2019. While he may be gone, his impact on the sport will never be forgotten. Every year in March, snowboarders on boards from all brands come together on A Day for Jake. It serves as a reminder of what Jake did for this community, but also honors his memory by bringing people together for the sake of fun. If you are smiling on a snowboard, you are keeping Jake’s spirit alive. #RideOnJake
