The G3 Alpinist+ Universal is a nylon plush climbing skin for ski touring. This is the 2022/23 version in size Small, for skis 161 to 171 cm long, 115 mm wide.

What it's for

Climbing skins stick to your ski bases so you can walk uphill. G3's Universal skins use a nylon plush, which G3 describes as built for durability and versatility, with a balance of grip, glide, weight, and durability for any location and conditions.

How it works

Tip connector: G3's self aligning stainless steel hands pivot to grab the ski tip, so they fit different tip shapes and keep the skin centered

Tail connector: an over center camming clip stays positioned on the tail strap. G3 says this reduces tail strap wear and makes adjusting and tensioning easier

Adhesive: G3 rates its Alpinist skin glue to -30 °C (-22 °F)

Trim to fit: you buy a width at least as wide as the widest part of your ski and cut the skin to match the sidecut

• How to check yours: measure the widest point of your ski, usually the tip. A 115 mm skin gives full coverage on skis up to 115 mm wide there. Narrower skis are fine since you trim the excess
