The Outbound Mountain Gear AIARE Avalanche Level 2 Hut course is a three day AIARE 2 course run from a fully stocked backcountry hut. It builds on AIARE 1 with deeper work on snowpack, terrain, and decision making in complex terrain.
AIARE 2 is for backcountry travelers who have taken AIARE 1 and Avalanche Rescue and have since spent at least a year traveling in the backcountry. The course adds the evaluation of critical hazard assessment factors to the hazard management model you learned in AIARE 1. Running it from a hut keeps the group in the snowpack for all three days.
Hazard and terrain: you learn to identify where avalanche hazards exist and to recognize terrain with severe consequences.
Observations: you use weather, snow, and avalanche observations to select appropriate terrain, and study how weather, snowpack, and avalanche processes relate to what you see in the field.
Leadership: you practice leading group discussion and managing risk.
Forecasting: you apply a forecasting framework that works with or without a local avalanche forecast.
