What it's for

This map is for planning and navigating ski and splitboard tours around Mount Baker, from Bagley Lakes to the Coleman Headwall. The terrain ranges from low angle glades to lines with mandatory rappels, and much of it is glaciated, so the map adds hazard notes that the Colorado maps in this series do not carry.

Features

  • Route detail: ski descents and uptracks drawn on a topographic base
  • Access: trailheads and parking information
  • Terrain data: slope angles and Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale (ATES) ratings
  • Hazard notes: terrain traps, convexities, and glacier travel considerations
  • Boundaries: resort boundaries shown
  • Zones covered: Bagley Lakes, Swift Creek, Shuksan Arm, Mount Ann and Annette, Herman Gulch, Ptarmigan Ridge, Iceberg and Mazama, Table Southwest Face, Barometer Mountain, Mount Herman, Herman and Stoneman, Slate Mountain, Shuksan, Mt. Baker (East, West, North, South), Goat Mountain, Winchester and Larrabee, Ruth and Icy, Twin Sisters Range
  • Companions: made to pair with the Beacon Guidebooks Mount Baker ski atlas and ski app, each sold separately

How it works

ATES ratings: the Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale classes terrain by how exposed it is to avalanches. It describes the terrain, not the day's snowpack, so use it together with the current avalanche forecast.

Avalanche training: a map or guidebook does not replace avalanche training, a current forecast, or rescue gear and practice. OMG runs AIARE avalanche courses.
