Kahtoola NANOspikes are low profile stretch on traction for running and walking shoes, with 10 tungsten carbide spikes per foot. They are made for icy roads, sidewalks, and urban trails.

What it's for

Winter road running and walking where the surface is ice and packed snow over pavement. The short spikes keep your foot close to the ground so your stride feels natural. For trails, look at EXOspikes or MICROspikes.

How it works

Tungsten carbide spikes: Ten spikes per foot, each 5.3 mm (0.21 in) long, with concave tips for grip on ice. Kahtoola says tungsten carbide is up to 100 times more abrasion resistant than steel, so the spikes survive pavement.

Traction plates: The spikes are anchored in aluminum and TPU lugs on dual compound TPU plates that spread impact. Ridges on the center plate grip uneven ice and snow, and directional lugs add traction on packed snow going up and down.

Elastomer harness: The harness shape is made to fit modern running shoes. Kahtoola rates it to stay elastic down to -22°F (-30°C).

Toe bail: A bar at the front keeps your shoe from sliding forward on descents.

Care and service

• Washing: Rinse with lukewarm water and let them air dry. Do not dry with heat.
• Storage: Make sure they are clean and dry before you put them away.
