The Mammut Alugator Pro Light Hoe is an aluminum avalanche shovel with a telescoping shaft and a D shaped grip. The shaft can also be set at 90 degrees so the shovel works as a hoe.

What it's for

An avalanche shovel is what moves the snow once a buried person has been located. This one meets the UIAA 156 standard for avalanche shovels and adds a hoe position for pulling snow out of the hole.

How it works

Blade: hardened, anodized aluminum with stabilization ribs. Mammut describes the shape as tilt resistant, with a sharpened edge and steps for your boot

Shaft: an oval telescoping shaft with an automatic spring lock, so it clicks into length without lining up a button

Hoe mode: the shaft can be positioned at 90 degrees to the blade, which lets you rake snow toward you

D grip: an ergonomic grip that gives control with gloves or mittens

Straight blade back: flat enough to cut clean snow profile walls
