The Mammut Probe 280 Speed Lock is a 280 cm aluminum avalanche probe that packs down to 45 cm. The Speed Lock system tensions and locks the probe with an audible click.

What it's for

A probe pinpoints a buried person after the transceiver search and tells you how deep to dig. It stays in the snow at the strike so the shovelers know where to work.

How it works

Speed Lock: a tensioning system that locks the assembled probe in place. An audible click tells you it is fully tensioned and engaged

Handle: an ergonomic handle that clips onto the extended probe and works with gloves

Depth scale: precise markings on both sides give a 360 degree depth guide, and the bottom section is orange so you can see when you are close

Tip: a drop shaped tip, wider than the shaft, so the probe slides through debris with less effort

Cord: a durable tensioning cord keeps the segments rigid

Features

• Segments: aluminum
• Cover: probe bag with an emergency plan printed on it
• Standard: certified to UIAA 157 for avalanche rescue probes

Setup and installation

• Deploy: throw the segments out, pull the cord until you hear the click, and check that every joint is seated
• Carry: inside your pack with your shovel
• Training: Avalanche rescue gear only helps if you know how to use it. Get training and practice with your gear regularly. OMG runs AIARE avalanche courses.
