The OMG Pole Clinometer is a sticker you put on your ski pole that turns the pole into a slope inclinometer, so you can read slope angle without taking anything out of your pack.
The OMG Pole Clinometer is a sticker you put on your ski pole that turns the pole into a slope inclinometer, so you can read slope angle without taking anything out of your pack.
Slope angle is a critical factor in assessing avalanche hazard. A pole clinometer lets you check it often because the tool is already in your hand. It gives you a slope angle reading only. It does not tell you whether a slope is safe, and the maker recommends formal avalanche education. OMG runs AIARE avalanche courses.
Plumb reference: your pole is the vertical reference. Let it hang freely from a loose grip, like a plumb bob, or the reading will not be accurate.
Curved lines: each slope line on the sticker is a precise sinusoidal curve, so it represents one specific slope angle once it is wrapped around a round pole shaft.
Side view method: stand where you can see the slope from the side, let the pole hang, and find the lines that appear to match the angle of the slope.
Top down method: at the top of a slope, sight down it so your line of sight matches the slope angle, then find the lines that look least curved.
Color guide: the color coded avalanche angle guide is intended only as a rough guide, because the range of slope angles prone to avalanche varies with the snowpack.
