The Ortovox ALU 320+ PFA is a 320 cm aluminum avalanche probe with the PFA quick assembly system and a rubber coated grip. It is extendible and has a replaceable tip.

What it's for

A probe pinpoints a buried person after the transceiver search and tells you how deep to dig. Ortovox rates this one for ski touring and freeride. The 320 cm length gives reach in deep snowpacks.

How it works

PFA quick assembly: the probe comes out of its quick release cover and tensions in one motion

Tensioning: a steel cable holds the segments together

Grip: rubber coated so it does not ice up in your hand

Tip: larger in diameter than the shaft so the probe passes through snow more easily. The tip can be replaced

Visual guide: depth markers, a clear 1 m marker, and a neon orange bottom segment that shows you are close to the buried person

Extendible: the + in the name means the probe accepts an extension

Setup and installation

  • Deploy: pull the probe from its cover, tension it, and check that every joint is seated
  • Carry: inside your pack with your shovel
  • Training: Avalanche rescue gear only helps if you know how to use it. Get training and practice with your gear regularly. OMG runs AIARE avalanche courses.
