What it's for

A chainring guard bolts to the crank in the outer chainring position. It sits between the chainring and your pant leg, and it takes the contact when the crank meets a log or a curb.

• How to check yours: the BCD is usually marked on the crank spider or on your current chainring. Count the teeth on your largest ring and confirm it is 48 or fewer.
